Update on Damage to Roadside Road

Dear Members,

I am writing just to let you know how we’re getting on with the roadside wall to Burton Tennis & Squash Club.

Basically, there are 3 possible scenarios:

1) WE CAN DEMOLISH THE ENTIRE WALL AND HAVE IT REBUILT IN STONE. This is the most expensive option and there is a question over whether we can claim on insurance as the roadside stretch of wall behind tennis courts 2, 3 and 4 seems to have been undermined by movement of the retaining wall beneath (subsidence) rather than storm damage (as occurred to the wall behind court 1).

2) WE REPAIR THE WALL RATHER THAN REPLACE IT.
Currently, it is impossible to get a quote on this work until we have the report back from the structural engineer, which we have been told should be delivered by the end of this week.

3) WE DEMOLISH THE WALL AND REPLACE IT WITH EITHER CHAIN-LINK FENCING OR STRIPE MESH SECURITY FENCING.
Although this is a cheaper option than brick, we have been told by the ESBC planning department that we would need planning permission to change the boundary wall from a brick one to any type of fencing. The planning application process would take at least 2 months, involving consultation with the neighbours; however, I am challenging and pursuing this at the highest levels as, apart from the pub, we have no neighbours immediately opposite the club. ESBC are meeting today to discuss the matter in order to revise (and hopefully overturn) their original decision.

Until we know the outcome of that meeting and have received the report from the structural engineer, we are stuck in a frustrating state of limbo, unable to move forward.

The committee is very aware that, apart from the inconvenience of the tennis courts being out of use for full tennis, there is the looming deadline of the 1st of April, which is the start of the next annual membership cycle and, so, are doing our very best to try to get everything repaired and ready by then.

As usual, I will keep you informed; however, in the meantime, all tennis courts will remain out of bounds for full tennis (but available for fitness and restricted coaching activities due to the presence of temporary safety fencing) until further notice.

Finally, we apologise for the inconvenience caused, but remain committed to rectifying the matter as soon as we can.

Shaun Baxter
