Update on Club Wall

Dear Members,

Before being able to organise repairs to the roadside wall to the tennis club, we first needed to establish who owns it: us or the council.

It has taken us several weeks of constant and frequent attempts at communicating with both East Staffordshire Borough and County Council to have it confirmed only yesterday that the wall does, indeed, belong to them.

The good news is that, because it is not our property, we will not have to pay for its repair; however, the bad news is that it puts us at the mercy of the council’s already lengthy repair schedule (presided over by their exclusive contractors, Abey), rather than being able to organise and conduct the repair ourselves. I’m sure that you can understand how extremely frustrating this is for the Club’s Committee, who just want to get the situation resolved as soon as possible.

We will do everything that we can to get the repair moved up the Council’s list of priorities by stating that:

1) the wall poses a risk to pedestrians as well as club members.
2) not being able to offer tennis at the club poses a serious risk to the club’s survival
3) after over 100 years in existence, the club is also an important community asset and plays host to many other non-members such as local school children and vulnerable adults.
4) the longer this situation persists, the more damages we will claim from the council

Because full tennis must continue to be ruled out until the wall is repaired, the Committee will need to consider whether we must now postpone the start of the next annual membership cycle (due to start on the 1st of April).

There are also several other things to discuss and consider. For example, we will try to talk to the council about the prospect of the wall being demolished (to remove the safety risk) and replaced by temporary Heras fencing so that we can start playing tennis again prior to the final repair being carried out.

We are making daily (often hourly) appeals to the council to meet with them to discuss a way forward, and I will keep you informed of our progress.

In the meantime, we apologise again for the disturbance to tennis matches and thank you for your patience.

Many regards,

Shaun Baxter
(BTSC Chairman)
