Dear Members,
I hope that you are all keeping well and enjoying the good weather today.
I am writing to you in response to the government’s announcement that gyms can re-open from the 25th of this month/July.
Selected members of our committee met last week to discuss ways of implementing the various challenging yet optimistic measures contained within draft guidance from England Squash; however, a few days ago, England Squash released the official draft and we were very disappointed to read the following leading statement:
“As social distancing cannot be guaranteed, the normal game of squash should not be played by players from different households.”
Financially, it does not make sense to open the club for just the few players who share the same household (e.g., COVID-secure cleaning responsibilities, insurance, no income from the bar etc); so, at this stage, we intend to hold firm and keep the club closed until there is a more significant relaxation of the lockdown.
I am meeting with England Squash on Monday and have submitted the following question for inclusion in that meeting:
“I am concerned that England Squash are merely responding to government directives rather than driving change.
As an intermediate stage between the current situation and complete normality, surely it would make sense to introduce the notion of 'squash bubbles' whereby each player must be confined to playing with the same person or persons until the virus disappears or a vaccine is developed. That way, any possible transmission would be restricted to each 'bubble' and thus reduce the chances of a wide-scale outbreak within each club.
Have England Squash and/or Sport England proposed this to the government for squash and other close-contact sports?”
Our committee also intends to meet again this week to discuss matters further and, if there are any further developments, I will let you know.
Many regards,
Shaun Baxter (BTSC Chairman)
