Court maintenance and blood spillages.

Dear Members

The Committee wish to inform members that there is an upcoming cleaning programme arranged for the squash courts and therefore booking is restricted. The programme is as follows:
Monday 9th June and Tuesday 10th June Court 3 & 4
Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th June Court 2 & 3
All courts will be back playable by Friday 13th June.

The cost of each court is £1600 which includes the cleaning both floors and walls which is essential to keep them in tip top condition totalling £4800.

It has been recently bought to the attention of the committee that there were two incidents of squash/racketball play where players/members sustained injuries causing bleeding whilst on court.

Sadly, it appears there was no attempt to clean the blood spillage at the time of injury and had to be cleaned by volunteer members, nor were these injuries recorded in the accident book which is kept in the kitchen, alongside First Aid boxes and Blood Spill Kit which contains appropriate PPE and Clinell Spill Wipes.

It is of paramount importance that if any member or their guest is injured it is recorded in the accident book, so the welfare of the player can be reviewed up by our Safeguarding Lead Heather Green, and also any subsequent bleeding is managed either by the member themselves (unless they have life threatening injuries) or their opponent can offer assistance with this.

All HSE guidance indicates that blood spillages MUST be cleaned up immediately due to the risk of Blood Borne Viruses and it is not the job of the volunteer members who find this out days later leaving both risk and damage to the courts.

A protocol will be placed outside each squash court imminently, guiding members of how to manage blood spillages, there will also be an additional spend on extra blood spillage kits available adjacent to the upstairs squash courts.

At this time, we also wish to remind members that when indicating you are playing with a ‘Guest, that the ‘Guest’ facility was created for perspective members not for social games with friends who have no intention to join, this continues to be monitored.

BTSC Club Rules state
Visitors 27: ‘Any individual may only be introduced as a playing guest on two occasions in any twelve-month period and must join the Club as a member if they wish to make a third, or any further use of the playing facilities. 28. Visitors are the responsibility of the member who introduces them to the Club.

The Club holds Public Liability insurance for ‘Guests’ and team players from other clubs in matches, so communication of any injury is vital as is the cleaning up of bodily fluid/blood spillages.

Thank you for your anticipated co-operation in the above.

Regards
The Committee
