Dear Member,
I hope that you are keeping well.
I am writing to you in order to keep you informed of developments at Burton Tennis and Squash Club.
Thanks to the valiant efforts of Treasurer Jon Charvell and book-keeper Libby Duffield, we are managing to keep our head above water, financially, while the club is closed.
We have:
1) secured a £10,000 government grant via the local council.
2) had our LTA registration fees refunded (£440)
3) cancelled various monthly outgoings (e.g., BT Sport, Rainbow waste disposal etc)
4) been told that we are going to be eligible for an ‘old for new’ exchange on unopened barrels by our bar supplier.
5) been keeping our eye open on the LTA site for announcement of their hardship grant (imminent).
6) applied for a Sports England grant.
Our Membership Secretary Dick Lathbury has managed all direct debits so that they are on hold until we re-open.
A special mention must go to Steve and Heather Green who have continued to visit the club on a regular basis to carry out various forms of routine maintenance, which is vital to the ongoing well-being of the club, and we thank them very much for that.
Regarding sporting activities, in response to Boris Johnson’s latest announcement, it is clear that we cannot re-introduce squash yet. Here is the official guidance from England Squash:
[ADVICE ON COMMUNITY SQUASH (UPDATED 11.05.20)
Squash clubs and facilities should remain closed until further notice following the Prime Minister's address to the nation on 10th May. As we await further information from the UK Government, we are planning how we can best support squash clubs when they reopen, including grants and guidance for day-to-day operations.]
Regarding tennis, here is the latest advice in the 50-page government guidance document:
[1.3 ARE YOU REOPENING TENNIS COURTS / GOLF COURSES / BASKETBALL COURTS ETC
Yes. Sports courts can re-open, but you should only partake in such activities alone, with members of your household, or with one other person from outside your household, while practising social distancing.
You should not use these facilities if you are showing coronavirus symptoms, or if you or any of your household are self-isolating.]
At BTSC, courts can be used on a ‘first come-first served’ basis (excuse the pun) during the lock-down on the conditions stipulated above, but all players must do so at their own risk.
I will continue to keep you informed of any further developments.
In the meantime, keep safe, and hope to see you all again soon,
Shaun Baxter
[BTSC Chairman]
